It’s a little quieter around here.
For part of the year, our stills take a well-earned break as we enter what’s known as the Silent Season - the annual pause in whisky production at Clydeside Distillery.
For a distillery, silence can feel a little unusual. The sounds of production are such a familiar part of everyday life here, from the movement of spirit through the stills to the activity around the production floor.
But the Silent Season is an important part of the whisky-making year.
Time for a little maintenance
Even our stills need a little time off.
With production paused, our team can turn their attention to essential maintenance, cleaning and preparation throughout the distillery. It’s a chance to make sure everything is in good order before production begins again.
There’s plenty happening behind the scenes, even if you can’t hear it.
The whisky doesn't stop
While the stills are quiet, our whisky continues its journey.
Spirit already produced at Clydeside is resting in cask, where time plays its part in developing the character of the whisky. The production may have paused, but the maturation continues.
And that’s one of the things that makes whisky-making so fascinating - there’s always something happening, even when it seems like nothing is happening at all.
A different side of Clydeside
The Silent Season also offers a chance to appreciate the distillery from a different perspective.
Without the familiar sounds of production, there’s more time to notice the details around you - the stills, the mash house, the architecture and, of course, the River Clyde that has been part of Glasgow’s whisky story for generations.
It’s a quieter time, but Clydeside still has plenty of stories to tell.
Until the stills return
The Silent Season is only temporary.
Before long, production will begin again, the stills will fire back into life and another chapter of Clydeside spirit will begin.
Until then, we’ll make the most of the quieter moments, keep everything ready behind the scenes and look forward to hearing those familiar sounds once again.
For now, the stills are silent. The whisky journey continues.
